Description

‘Divine Principles’ is a body of work that explores how humans have attempted to understand the universe from the molecular to the planetary through religion, mythology, geometry, and science.
To create these works, 3D digital models of Hellenic gods that represent the planets of the solar system were sourced, and then digitally distorted using images of their eponymous planets.
Each of the ‘Divine Principles’ sculptures exist as 3D models and as physical objects, having been first 3D-printed for evaluation and refinement, before being cast in bronze, iron, or silver, or carved in marble. Each of the works in the series is representative of how an idea can change over time, and how we justify the universe and our place in it.
For example, in 'Venus Celestis' the form of Hellenic god Venus - the god of victory, fertility, prosperity, beauty, and love - is distorted by images from her counterpart planet, Venus. The resulting sculpture makes manifest the tension between, on the one hand, religion and mythology, and on the other, science. Here, they are indivisible, locked in an embrace, dissolving into and distorting one another, their connection ostensibly forever in motion.
.
This artwork is currently on display in the Royal Academy's #SummerNotSummer Exhibition 2020, in Gallery VII.
.
Zachary Eastwood-Bloom
'Venus Celestis'
Marble
80 x 58 x 40 cm
31 1/2 x 33 4/5 x 15 7/10 in
Edition of 3
