This painting was based on a very intricate shadow cast by a wrought iron staircase I saw in a Hitchcock film. As I worked on it, the individual shapes started to take on lives of their own, and I started seeing them as different characters, each in their own story. Katherine Lubar's work investigates the behaviour of shadows and light patterns within an architectural context. Using photographic material as a source, she aims to distill the essence of the shadow or light pattern she has captured; however, her goal is for the final work to rest on the border between representation and abstraction.
