Humans have long sought a more direct mode of communication. Media, even in the capable hands of a master, offer mere translations, which add noise and distort meaning. In this series, Chris Tille generates images from his brain waves, taking a step forward in our ability to produce an unmediated artistic expression. Tille’s work at the intersection of arts and science takes new shape in his virgin writings—images written without union to a medium. Electrodes measure his brain currents, creating nebulous forms that are difficult to read with the analytical mind. Rather, they speak to intentions rather more raw, before they’ve been shaped by the structure of communication. Despite their visual abstraction, Tille emphasizes that he creates with directed thought, focusing on people and events central to his life. He observes in real-time the effects of certain thoughts on his brainwaves and adjusts his attention in a deliberate feedback loop to determine a willed outcome.
