The Milanese’s architectural elements such as architraves, facades and main entrances are characterised by the presence of grotesque ornaments: morphological and monstrous creatures that have the apotropaic value to protect the inhabitants and frighten away external evil spirits. Nowadays these demonic stone faces are covered by layers of black dust to emissions from manufacturing processes, waste treatment and disposal, combustion in industry, and transport. Gaia observes their texture and portrays their features. The installation is formed by a composition of hybrid bodies made out of mask-mufflers. Decontextualised urban elements that create the pollution realm, a scenario that blurs the boundaries between speculative imaginary realities and the current atmospheric situation in Milan.
