Tibollo’s second photograph, which we like to think of as Whirlpool Tonality, in contrast to Checkers Riot, portrays a more fluid and feminine approach to art; evoking a pool or possibly an aquarium with hidden treasures glimmering underneath the surface. While Checkers Riot prioritizes the concrete and legible aspects of Tibollo’s artwork, Whirlpool Tonality embraces the surreal aspects of queer art, as shown by the abstracting effect of ripples on the photograph’s surface. The relation between the synecdochal evocation in each case contains the balanced tension of the total piece and conveys its revolutionary intent. As Gershom Scholem put it, “the image escapes in every direction.”
