Tibollo’s first image, which we have tentatively dubbed Checkers Riot, is a sardonic commentary of the relationships between art and hedonic precarity, portraying beer bottle lids adorning a minimalist chessboard. The implicit subjects are imagined as knowing the rules of chess, but deciding, instead, to drunkenly play checkers to rules ascertained and reimagined as the game progresses late into the early morning, over the sounds of old-school lounge music and new- wave experimental hyperpop compositions. The theme and evoked setting tacitly provoke a sense of the balance between living to youthful excess, and the more cynical mechanics of ambitious competition between vivant bohemian subjects mutually and contrapuntally “making up the rules as we go”, together and as adversarial collaborators.
