This work, ‘12914 Straight Lines - Ourea 1’ is composed of 12,914 straight pen lines on paper.<br/>I made it during a period of reflection and experimentation, this drawing was the result of an attempt to build form using straight lines as a lowest elemental denominator.<br/>In Greek mythology, the 10 ‘Ourea’ were the mountains - the parthenogenetic progeny of Gaia (mother of the universe), and members of the Greek primordial deities, who were the first-born elemental gods and goddesses.<br/>Around 700 BCE, the poet Hesiod wrote:<br/>&quot;And Gaia brought forth long hills, graceful haunts<br/>of the goddess Nymphs who dwell amongst the glands of the hills.&quot;<br/>For me, they represent a natural presence as well as a mythological one; the mountain or Ourea that I have drawn here is a sanctuary away from the machinery of civilisation and a de-materialising, digitised society.<br/>.<br/>This work is currently on display in the Royal Academy's #SummerNotSummer Exhibition 2020, in Gallery V.<br/>.<br/>Zachary Eastwood-Bloom<br/>'12914 Straight Lines // Ourea 1'<br/>Digital plotted pen on paper<br/>60 x 85 cm (unframed) / 67 x 92 x 4 cm (framed)<br/>Edition of 20
