This work was created in response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February of 2022, a humanitarian conflict I have been heavily involved in while working in Washington, DC. The work is composed of a historical map of Central and Eastern Europe, representing the once-Soviet Union and the states that were both formerly and currently under its control. The layout of the front cover of Life Magazine is layered on top of the map, providing a historical reference to the tensions culminating in the modern conflict. In addition, the Cyrillic text at the top of the work reads “Blossom Our Friendship,” which refers to a propaganda poster for Ukrainian and Russian reunification, furthering the historical context of the invasion.
